Who else just had a whiff of fresh bread with a side of childhood memories? Orsi’s is still serving love by the slice, and we’re fully leaning into comfort food season.

January’s nearly wrapped, and the city’s filling the calendar with all kinds of good stuff: bee art, Broadway tunes, boba nights, and one extremely adoptable pup. It’s a fun one! Dig in, make some plans, and warm up while we wait on February.

In today’s Scoop:

  • 🦒 A New Kind of Care

  • 🟣 From Leader to Owner

  • 🍕 Warm Bites, Fresh Air

  • 🎭 Art, Improv, & Ice Time

🍞 A Century of Winter Comfort

621 Pacific St, Omaha, NE

January’s winding down, and Orsi’s Italian Bakery & Pizzeria is exactly where Omaha warms itself up. This 1919 Little Italy original smells like fresh bread, slow mornings, and family recipes done right.

Expect hearty Sicilian-style pizza, bold marinara, and a deli lined with imported oils, sharp cheeses, and spiced meats. The welcome is just as generous, sometimes with surprise garlic bread. Come for history, leave fed in every sense!

🌲 Playtime for Little Explorers

7051 S 181st St, Omaha, NE

Is cabin fever getting real? Playful Pines is your deep breath! This airy, nature-inspired indoor play park is thoughtfully designed for kids six and under, with slides, netted floors, cozy hideaways, and sensory corners that encourage confidence and independent play.

Capacity stays limited, so it never feels chaotic. Caregivers settle into a comfy parent area with outlets, complimentary coffee, and private nursing rooms. It’s calm, clean, and genuinely welcoming.

🦒 New Animal Hospital Opens at Omaha Zoo

Photo from Facebook: Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

The Gist: A big behind-the-scenes upgrade just opened at Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. The new 32,000-square-foot Bill and Berniece Grewcock Animal Hospital brings advanced veterinary care under one roof, including intensive care, surgery, a pharmacy, and the Zoo’s first-ever CT scanner. It replaces a 30-year-old facility and is already treating animals.

Why It Matters: This investment strengthens care for the Zoo’s 39,000 animals and reinforces Omaha’s role as a leader in animal health and conservation. The hospital is private for now, with educational tour opportunities being explored for the future.

🟣 Supernovas Leader Steps Into Ownership

The Gist: The Omaha Supernovas are keeping it in the family. Team president Diane Mendenhall has been named a new co-owner of the pro volleyball club she helped launch. After this season, she will shift into a franchise advisor role. Stepping up next is Amanda Sjuts, a former Nebraska volleyball standout and 2006 national champion, who will become the team’s next president.

Why It Matters: This move reinforces local leadership and long-term stability for one of Omaha’s fastest-growing sports teams. The leadership transition will take place after the current season wraps up.
