One of the best parts of living in Omaha is how quickly the city shifts once the weather turns. Trails get busy again, concert calendars explode overnight, and everyone suddenly remembers how much they love being outside.

This week feels especially packed in the best way. There’s a major new vision for North Omaha, a packed Memorial Day schedule, and a few local businesses that deserve a spot on your weekend itinerary.

Also, shoutout to everyone pretending they’re “just going for one drink” at Aksarben this weekend. 😉

🌍 A vision for Malcolm X’s birthsite

The Gist: On May 19th, Omaha leaders gathered at 35th and Evans Streets to unveil details for a 120 million dollar transformation of Malcolm X’s 20-acre birthsite. The multi-phase project will be anchored by a 30,000-square-foot cultural center and museum, backed by a 20 million dollar state grant. Led by Mayor John Ewing Jr. and MX Development group, officials expect to break ground in mid-2027 and complete the museum within three years.

Why It Matters: This project brings a deeply personal dream to life for North Omaha, building on the legacy of Rowena Moore, who used her own savings in 1971 to protect this land. By adding affordable housing, an amphitheater, and business space, the campus will drive local economic growth and turn this historic neighborhood into a global destination for civil rights history.

What's Next: Design bids are currently being evaluated ahead of the planned groundbreaking in mid-2027.

🌽 Omaha ranks Top 5 for working moms

The Gist: A May 2026 study by CoworkingCafe ranked Omaha as the fifth-best large U.S. metro for working moms. The study highlighted our city’s impressive 78% moms employment ratio, a quick 21-minute average commute, and affordable childcare that takes up just 8% of the median family income. Omaha joined fellow Midwestern hubs like Minneapolis, Denver, St. Louis, and Kansas City at the top of the list.

Why It Matters: This is a huge win for our community because it proves that Midwestern affordability and shorter commutes beat out massive coastal paychecks when it comes to daily quality of life.

🌭 The legendary smokehouse keeping grills interesting

2532 S 24th St, Omaha, NE

If you are staging a Memorial Day weekend cookout that genuinely impresses, Stoysich House of Sausage is the ultimate insider move. This multi-generational South 24th Street institution has spent 65 years quietly perfecting more than 140 varieties of locally sourced, spice-imported meats.

Plan your menu around the smoky Polish links, sweet yet spicy "Cherry Bomb" sausages, and cult-favorite Italian sausage spiked with tomato and romano cheese. Grab a jar of their signature red pepper sauce! But… be sure to clear your Saturday morning schedule; regulars know exactly when the stock hits the cases.

🚲 Getting gear rolling for trail season

15115 Industrial Rd, Omaha, NE

This long weekend is when Omaha bikes finally leave the garage. The Bike Way has been a trusted west Omaha presence since 1999, bringing over 25 years of local history and 75 years of combined repair experience to the neighborhood.

Located right between Oakview Mall and the Zorinsky Lake trail, they offer free, required safety inspections for Nebraska Devo mountain biking participants to get their 2026 season stickers.

Beyond expert quick-turnaround tune-ups, pickup, and delivery, they even connect the community through their Spokes People Podcast, currently back for season three.
