Summer has officially settled into Omaha, and this week's forecast is bringing more than just sunshine. While temperatures are climbing, so is the list of things happening around town. Festivities are taking over downtown, live music is popping up across the city, and soccer is back under the lights, just to start.

We also found a bookstore that's always good for losing track of time! Grab a cold drink, stay cool, and make the most of everything our city has to offer this week.

⚖️ City Council votes to lock in $15 minimum wage

The Gist: In a closely watched 4-3 vote on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Omaha City Council passed an ordinance keeping the local minimum wage at $15 an hour for all employees, including youth workers under 16. Council President Danny Begley championed the move to honor the 70.2% of Omaha voters who originally approved the wage hike back in 2022. The newly passed ordinance is now set to take effect on June 1, 2027, following an amendment by Council Member LaVonya Goodwin.
Why It Matters: While the decision places Omaha right in the middle of an ongoing legal battle with Nebraska’s Attorney General, it sends a clear message that our local leaders are willing to stand up and fight for the choices our community made at the ballot box.
🥵 Salvation Army Opens Cooling Centers Across Omaha
The Gist: With a massive summer heat dome pushing temperatures to dangerous highs this week, the Salvation Army of Omaha is opening its doors to keep our neighbors safe. These cooling centers offer free, air-conditioned spaces and cold bottled water during peak hot hours for anyone needing relief from the scorching weather.
Why It Matters: Having these accessible, friendly spaces scattered throughout our community ensures that nobody has to brave the extreme heat alone. It is a simple but life-saving way our town looks out for its own when the weather gets tough.

Do not leave without the curry fries. With a welcoming crew, a breezy patio, and effortless vegan and gluten-free options, it is a neighborhood staple for good reason.
