One of our favorite things about Omaha is that every neighborhood has its own personality.

This week you'll find art in Benson, music along the riverfront, ramen in Blackstone, and a bookstore that's easy to lose track of time in. Throw in a few great community events, and you've got a pretty great excuse to explore somewhere new.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

🚧 Streetcar route block party brings some fun

The Gist: Rally on the Route is coming to 16th Street between Farnam and Harney streets on Sept. 5 from 2 to 8 p.m. Hosted by the Streetcar Impact Alliance and funded by donations, the block party features family activities, evening entertainment and food and drink tents from local restaurants. Park Omaha is offering $1 parking at the Park One garage on Douglas Street and free metered parking a block away.

Why It Matters: Local businesses along the streetcar route have struggled with lost foot traffic since construction started over a year ago. Organizers like Mercury bar owner Clark Ross hope the event reminds everyone that downtown remains active, accessible and worth a visit.

🚋 Relief money arrives for streetcar-weary shops

The Gist: The Nebraska Enterprise Fund's Streetcar Impact Fund is now taking applications from businesses along the future streetcar route hit by construction. Backed by a private donor, it offers grants up to $10,000 for shops showing at least a 10% revenue drop, plus forgivable loans up to $50,000. Around 27 grants have already gone out, including one to Blackstone's Nite Owl Bar.

Why It Matters: Corridor businesses in Blackstone, Midtown, and the Old Market have absorbed years of noise, dust, and detours. This is real money aimed at helping the smallest of them hang on until the line opens.

🍜 Late-night slurps and punchy small plates

6109 Maple St, Omaha & other Ika San locations

Ika Ramen and Izakaya pairs graffiti-lined walls and that izakaya spirit with deep, restorative broths.

Before the season shifts, grab a seat for one last summer hurrah over handcrafted cocktails and the limited-time "I Can Taste Colors" ramen: a colorful bowl packed with gochujang sausage, kimchi sauce, and fried eggs. Pair it with Tokyo fried chicken or spicy tuna tots for a simply shareable spread.

📚 Cool corners for quiet afternoons

1234 S 13th St #203, Omaha

Pop Fiction Bookstore is making a name for itself in Little Bohemia where you enter for one title and linger for hours. Owned by a former teacher, it is a colorful, soft-chair space sitting alongside Dusk and The Green House.

The shelves feature women, queer, trans, and BIPOC authors, alongside August events, 2nd Friday discounts, and Nebraska Book Trail passports through September. Ask whoever is behind the counter for a recommendation. 😉
