Happy Fourth of July, Omaha!

There’s something about this time of year that makes the city feel a little more fun. The parks fill up, patios get busy, neighbors gather, and suddenly every weekend comes with a reason to get outside.

This Scoop is full of those little moments that make the city feel like home. Whether you’re making holiday plans or just looking for a fun way to spend a summer evening, we hope you find something worth adding to your calendar.

🎆 Eye On July hands out free fireworks safety glasses

The Gist: Nebraska Medicine ophthalmologist Dr. Rao Chundury and his kids are stepping up to make our Independence Day celebrations a whole lot safer. Through their nonprofit, Eye On July, the family is giving away more than 10,000 pairs of free safety glasses at 70 locations across the state, including 10 Nebraska Medicine clinics and local libraries.

Why It Matters: This heartwarming family initiative reminds us to look out for one another so we can all enjoy the holiday safely. It is a simple, smart way to protect our vision, whether you are the designated person lighting the fuse or just watching the show from a lawn chair!

🏙️ Omaha and Lincoln Take the Top Spots for Renters

The Gist: Forbes ranked Omaha the No. 2 city in the country for renters among the 95 largest U.S. cities, with Lincoln at No. 1, giving Nebraska a clean sweep of the top two. The list weighed rent-to-income ratios, rental prices, availability, and amenities. Researchers did note a tight local vacancy rate as something to keep an eye on.

Why It Matters: It is another national nod to the quality of life and relative affordability that locals already know about.

🍦 America's Best Scoop Is Made Right Here

3921 Farnam Street, Blackstone District & 1241 Millwork Ave, Millwork Commons, Omaha

The line snaking past the Blackstone District window confirms it: USA Today just named Coneflower Creamery the country's top ice cream shop. Everything is strictly farm-to-cone, using local milk and fresh herbs.

Pints of the bright Garden Mint Chip are ideal for celebrating America’s 250th birthday at home. Just plan your stash early: all three spots are open Friday and Sunday, but closed Saturday for the Fourth.

🎆 Midsummer luck amongst the local greenery

3737 Farnam St Ste 103, Omaha

When holiday fireworks are over, the summer energy is ready to heat up with Nodest Home Plants. Beyond their custom soil bar and expert repotting services, the neighborhood shop is taking things outdoors on July 11th at 6 PM.

They are hosting an evening of plant bingo over at Joslyn Castle, complete with food trucks, trivia, and a chance to take home some massive new plants.
