There is something pretty special about a city where a neighborhood can carry a tradition for 100 years and still feel like it has more chapters ahead. That is the story unfolding in Little Italy, where old families, new businesses, and Santa Lucia traditions continue to shape the community.

Elsewhere around town, Omaha is adding new places to hear music and spend a Friday night. We rounded up a few of our favorites below.

💗 Little Italy’s moment, 100 years in the making

The Gist: Omaha's Little Italy is drawing fresh energy as the neighborhood marks a century of Santa Lucia tradition. Longtime families, new businesses, and old Sicilian devotion all figure into the revival The Reader traced through the streets near 10th and William. The first festival ran back in 1925, and the annual procession of Santa Lucia has anchored the community ever since.

Why It Matters: It's a reminder that some of Omaha's best character lives in its oldest neighborhoods, and it's very much alive. The Italian community's La Festa Italiana runs Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4 to 6.

🎶 A New Music Club Inside the Holland

The Gist: Omaha Performing Arts has opened Matchbox Omaha, a 727-capacity club tucked into Scott Hall at the Holland Center. It reimagines the old 1200 Club as a casual, mostly standing-room space with upgraded sound and lighting and a couple of bars, built to give emerging and touring acts a more intimate downtown room.

Why It Matters: Omaha's live-music map just added a right-sized venue that sits neatly between the tiny clubs and the big arenas. Early bookings include Adelitas Way on Nov. 12 and Big Wreck on Nov. 15.

🍔 Cold pitchers and classic patties

2368 S 29th St, Omaha

Family-run since 1965, Dinker’s Bar and Grill is South Omaha’s ultimate dive for honest comfort food. Skip the white tablecloths for hand-pressed burgers like the Haystack (stacked high with ham and a fried egg) or dive into a flattop New York Strip paired with garlic toast.

Between 75¢ wing nights, speed-puzzling tournaments over pitchers of beer, and a rock-solid local tradition, it remains an irreplaceable watering hole.
Just remember: bring cash and an appetite.

🌱 Where discounted greenery finds a patient home

5603 NW Radial Hwy, Omaha

As late-summer gardens settle, Benson Plant Rescue offers a fresh seasonal project. The place spends its days saving overstocked perennials, succulents, and houseplants from retail dumpsters, offering them up for just a few dollars.

These rescued greens help fund local library books and neighborhood food pantries, while local educators and healthcare workers can pick out complimentary plants. Ready to feel good giving an overlooked leafy friend a second chance?
