We’re officially in that sweet spot before summer hits full blast. Mornings are still manageable, evenings are perfect for being outside, and the local event calendar is picking up speed.

It’s also a great time to explore parts of town you haven’t been to in a while. Maybe that’s a new restaurant, maybe it’s a park you forgot about. Either way, this week gives you a few good excuses to go. See you around! 😎

☀️ A new break for shelter pups at NHS

The Gist: The Nebraska Humane Society launched a new Barks and Rec program, allowing locals to borrow shelter dogs for short daycations or overnight staycations. Volunteers receive a handy kit with treats and a Pawsport detailing dog-friendly spots around Omaha to explore together. To join in, you just fill out a quick lifestyle survey online, and the shelter's behavior team will match you with the perfect canine companion for your summer adventures.
Why It Matters: By taking a dog out, you help the shelter learn how they behave in real-world settings, making it much easier to find them a forever home. Best of all, if you or someone you meet on your outing decides to adopt, the Nebraska Humane Society will completely waive the adoption fee.
🎉 Huge Milestone for Omaha Nonprofits
The Gist: Omaha Venture Group gathered early this month at Shelterbelt Theatre to celebrate its 2026 grant recipients and hand out its largest total payout to date. Five local organizations, including Creative Reuse Omaha and CareerLadder, each received $10,000 to launch or expand new initiatives across our city. This incredible giving circle has now poured over $865,000 into 183 neighborhood nonprofits since 2002.
Why It Matters: It was extra special to see the event hosted at Shelterbelt Theatre and catered by House of Bah, which are both past grant winners now doing great things. It just goes to show how much our community blossoms when we take a chance on each other.

🐢 Noodles and nightcaps on the balcony

3910 Harney St, Omaha
From the team behind Bellevue’s beloved IPho, Golden Turtles brings a fresh, late-night energy to Harney Street. Perched above the karaoke bar, the space features a strip-view balcony that is practically made for summer evenings.
Golden hours here pair best with crispy crab rangoon, comforting bowls of rare steak pho, and a cocktail menu that leans into Vietnamese coffee. It is the casual, flavor-packed hang Blackstone has been missing.

💍 From sparking stories to wearable custom art

1019 Howard St, Omaha
Goldsmith Silversmith has built a loyal following for custom pieces, thoughtful repairs, and a personal approach that keeps neighbors coming back for years. Dwaine, Danielle, and the team specialize in giving new life to old stories, often helping visitors redesign family heirlooms into something wearable again.
The shop balances modern lab-grown diamonds with vintage treasures, making custom projects feel exciting! Refresh your summer accessories, catch up on quick repairs, and maybe even spend a few minutes petting Finnigan, the resident shop cat.

Nitro is a 4-year-old boxer mix who weighs 66 pounds
He is the dog shelter volunteers visit when they need a breather because Nitro prefers sunbathing with a tennis ball over high-energy zooming. He is tolerant of other dogs, and his neighborly personality makes him a peaceful companion.
Nitro is heartworm positive, but his treatment is fully covered by the shelter. His adoption fee is $85.00.
