The first snow always catches us a little off guard, and last weekend’s icy blast was no joke. Streets froze, cars slid, and one Omaha block turned into a downhill bumper car ride. But what stood out? Neighbors helping neighbors, and a few local heroes with snow shovels and open doors.

Meanwhile, it’s officially holiday season! Whether you’re strolling through light displays, sipping something warm, or catching The Nutcracker downtown, there’s a little sparkle waiting everywhere.

🚗 Brothers Step In To Help After Icy Omaha Pile-Up

The Gist: The hilly stretch of Pratt Street turned slick after the recent winter storm, leading to back-to-back crashes as cars slid down the icy block. Neighbors say everyone walked away safely, thanks in part to three brothers who ran outside after hearing the collisions and spent the day helping dig out cars and welcome stranded drivers inside to warm up.

Why It Matters: It was a tough day on the roads, but the neighborhood pulled together when it counted. Crews continue treating streets as cold weather lingers. Read more here.

🌿 World-Famous Designer Brings a Garden Gem to Omaha

The Gist: Renowned Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf (known for New York’s High Line and Chicago’s Lurie Garden) is crafting a new public space in Omaha’s Old Market. Called Polina Gardens, it will bloom at 13th and Leavenworth with native plants, art installations, and a teaching area for kids. Lauritzen Gardens staff will care for the site to ensure Oudolf’s vision endures.

Why It Matters: The garden is set to become a world-class attraction celebrating Nebraska’s natural beauty. Grand opening planned for April 2026. Read more here.
