The best summer plans usually don't require much overthinking. Find a good patio, head to the lake, spread out a blanket for some live music, or just pick a neighborhood and see where the day takes you.

This week's Scoop has plenty of inspiration, along with a couple of bigger stories that could have a real impact on Omaha. Wherever you end up, we hope you make the most of these long summer days.

🚁 Amazon Prime air drones are coming to Omaha

The Gist: Amazon confirmed the Omaha metro will be its 11th U.S. market for Prime Air drone delivery, launching out of its Papillion fulfillment center by the end of summer. Eligible customers within about eight miles of the site can get shoebox-sized packages weighing five pounds or less dropped in about 20 minutes.

Why It Matters: It is a real-world glimpse of how the last mile is changing, right in our backyard. Whether you love it or side-eye it, this one is worth watching.

🏫 School Budget and Tax Adjustment

The Gist: Omaha Public Schools presented its budget proposal today, July 22, requesting an 8-cent tax levy increase for the upcoming school year. The district is facing a 51 million dollar cut in state aid after a state calculation error, yet needs to grow its overall budget by 10 million dollars to keep student programs running.

Why It Matters: No one loves seeing their property taxes go up, but our local schools need steady funding to keep our kids thriving. Balancing our own household budgets is tough, but this decision directly impacts the resources, support, and quality of education our neighborhood children receive every day.

What's Next: Final property valuations wrap up next month in August, followed by public hearings on the proposal in early September before the school board takes its final vote.

🍣 A surprising spot for world-class sushi

6011 Maple St, Omaha

Unlikely places have a way of making the best stories. Housed in a former Subway, Yoshitomo refuses to behave like standard fine dining. Chef David, now a three-time James Beard finalist, does things his own way, pairing pristine traditional nigiri with playful snacks like the Hotate XO nori tartlet.

Recently featured in The New Yorker and named to the 50 Best Discovery list, it remains a neighborhood triumph that puts Omaha on the global culinary map.

🛶 Trade the heat for a board and a quiet lake

6012 N 102nd St Unit 641741, Omaha

Since 2013, Neighborhood Offshore has been Omaha's easiest way to get on the water. The women-owned board shop and outfitter runs stand-up paddleboard, kayak, and cruiser bike rentals at three Omaha lakes, with a friendly team that walks first-timers through everything before they push off.

There is also a small-group Sunset Sailing Tour at Lake Cunningham (ages 19+, next open date July 31), plus SUP yoga and private events. Book online at least a day or two ahead.
